   Si Wu is a full professor at the Department of Polymer Science and Engineering, the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), Hefei, China. He obtained the bachelor’s degree in polymer science in 2005 at USTC. He was supported by the joint doctoral promotion program, working on photoresponsive polymers at USTC and the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPIP), Mainz, Germany. After he received his PhD in 2010, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at MPIP. He was promoted to a group leader at MPIP in 2012. From 2012 to 2018, he was heading a research group focusing on synthesis of photoresponsive materials at MPIP. In 2018, he joined USTC as a full professor and started a new research group. His research interest include synthesis and characterization of photoresponsive polymers and nanomaterials.

   We synthesize photoresponsive soft matter, including photoresponsive polymers, hydrogels and nanoparticles. These photoresponsive soft matters are smart materials that can be controlled by light. They show potential applications in healable coatings, adaptive materials, biomedicine, solar energy conversion, and information storage. Our aim is to better understand the relationship between structural changes, dynamics, and performance of photoresponsive soft matter. We solve fundamental questions in photoresponsive soft matter with the perspective of future applications. We are working on the following photoresponsive materials:
1) Azobenzene-containing polymers
2) Visible and NIR light-responsive Ru-containing polymers
3) NIR light-responsive materials based on upconverting nanoparticles
