Dr. Xiaoyuan Song obtained bachelor and master degrees from Beijing Normal University in 1996 and 1999, respectively. In 2006, she obtained Ph. D degree in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology from the Department of Biology, University of Rochester, USA. Then she went on for postdoctoral fellowships at the University of California, San Diego from 2006 to 2012.

Dr. Xiaoyuan Song was granted the "Young Thousand Talents Plan" award in 2012 and has since been a professor in School of Life Science USTC. She is also joint-appointed as a faculty member at Division of Bio-X Interdisciplinary Sciences, Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Science at Microscale.

For many years, she has been engaged in the research on gene expression regulation, epigenetics, ncRNA, chromosome interaction, etc. A series of articles had been published in Genes Dev., Mol. Cell Biol., Nature, PNAS and other academic journals.
   Dr. Xiaoyuan Song first proved the “cross-talk” between one histone variant and another post-translational modification of histones in the study of histone phosphorylation and gene expression regulation (Genes Dev. 2012). Meanwhile, in the study of genotoxic stress-induced ncRNAs, she and collaborators demonstrated that lncRNA modulated and mediated transcriptional repression of the RNA-binding protein TLS, which had a very significant impact on the ncRNA research in gene regulation (Nature 2008). As a key participant, Dr. Xiaoyuan Song developed and refined a new 3D-DSL technique with low-background and high resolution for the study of short-range and long-range genome-wide chromatin interactions. This technique had been used successfully to identify enhancer networks in human disease highly associated and also gene desert region 9p21, interacting and regulating the multiple gene loci (Nature 2011).
   After joining USTC, Dr. Xiaoyuan Song’ team innovatively proposed that both lncRNAs and CTCF orchestrated three-dimensional chromatin conformation to regulate gene transcription (Cao 2015). They are doing in-depth studies on three-dimensional genome structure of di-nuclear organism (Tetrahymena thermophila) and age-dependent lncRNAs which involved in the formation of three-dimensional chromatin conformation to regulate learning and memory-related genes in brain aging and other aspects. Based on these, Dr. Xiaoyuan Song’ team want to provide a new strategy for delaying senescence and prevention of aging-related diseases.


1) Roles of three-dimensional transcriptional regulation orchestrated by lncRNAs and chromatin interaction/structure in brain aging.
2) To investigate the role of lncRNAs and chromatin interaction/structure in the process of spermatogenesis.
3) To study the function and molecular mechanism of key genes in meiosis.
